WHO: The tight-knit NSSA Southeast Conference family.
WHAT: NSSA Southeast Conference Contests #3 and #4.
WHEN: Saturday, November 14th and Saturday, November 21st.
WHERE: Ponce De Leon Landing, Melbourne Beach, FL.
WHY: For trophies, prizes, and valuable NSSA points towards the NSSA East Coast Championships, and eventually the NSSA National Championships. With Contest #3 running in big, unruly surf on November 14th — and a coordinated memorial paddle-out for Andy Irons being held at 4:00 p.m. — not all the heats were completed in time. But that just meant moving up Contest #4 to the following weekend, November 21st, and knocking the end of #3 and all of #4 in another day of sizeable autumn swell.
Top performers in Contest #3 included division winners Luke Marks (Open and Explorer Boys), Izzy Gomez (Open and Explorer Girls), Stevie Pittman (Open Mini Grom, Explorer Super Grom, and Explorer Menehune), Steven McLean (Open and Explorer Longboard), Randy Sanders (Explorer Masters and Explorer Seniors), and Giorgio Gomez (Open Juniors and High School Men’s Shortboard).
In Contest #4, the same suspects stood out, with Gomez winning Open Men’s, Explorer Men’s, and Explorer Juniors while Marks also double dipped in again in Explorer and Open Boys. Meanwhile, fresh faces like Luke Coleman and Avery Aydelotte worked their up to claim division titles. Watch out for this whole crew of NSSA Southeast Conference standouts to finish out the season strong and fix their focus on the 2011 NSSA East Coast Championships, scheduled for April 7th-11th on new turf in New Smyrna Beach.
