WHO: Diehard local ESA-Georgia District surfers
WHAT: ESA-Georgia District Double Points Contest #3
WHEN: Saturday, October 2nd, 2010
WHERE: Southside of Tybee Island Pier, Tybee Island, GA
WHY: For trophies, prizes, and valuable ESA points
towards ESA Mid-Atlantic Regional Surfing Championships berths, and eventually
the ESA Eastern Surfing Championships.
The ESA-Georgia District
Contest #3 started off well, with choppy but fun two- to three-foot surf
gracing the Peach State’s often-flat coastline. Robert Powers took the Boys division,
edging out his brother Alex for the top spot. I predict many more fun
battles between these two over the years. In Girls, the final turned into
a showdown between Georgia Cook and Alex Taylor, with Georgia taking 1st-place
and Alex taking 2nd. But Taylor got her revenge by winning in Women’s Longboard,
with Georgia in the runner-up position.
One of Tybee’s best young
up-and-coming surfers, Josh Richardson, had another great day. He took 1st
in Junior Shortboard, 2nd in Open Shortboard, and won the Open Longboard division. And
Vaughn Keener had a fruitful day himself, earning a 2nd-place in Masters, a 3rd
in Open Longboard, and the biggest win of the day, the coveted Open Shortboard
title. But with some of the most aggressive and fun to watch surfing of
the day, Phillip George captured the Masters title.
On the younger end of the
spectrum, Noah Mosley surfed well, capturing 1st-place in Menehune and then
capping off his day by taking 7th-place overall in Open Shortboard. I do
believe we will be hearing a lot of noise from Noah in the coming years. Joey
Crook, who also placed 6th in Open Shortboard and 2nd in Open Longboard, won
the Men’s Shortboard division. And in the Open Bodyboard division, Pedro
Ramos edged out Patrick Linkenhoker for 1st-place in easily the best boogie
heat of the year in the ESA-Georgia District. To top it all off, Pedro’s son
Pedro Jr. tied for 1st in Mini Menehunes with Carson Mosley.
Congratulations to all
the participants and each one of the day’s winners! Also deserving of
congratulations for yet another well-run contest are ESA-GA District
Directors Jeff and Tara Mosley, who were the recipients of the ESA’s Doc
Couture Award in 2008. –Joey Wilson
