Carolina District
WHAT: ESA-SSC District South Carolina Governor’s Cup of
Surfing/ 21st Annual South Carolina State Surfing Championships
WHEN: August 29th-30th, 2009
WHERE: The Washout, Folly Beach, SC
WHY: Duh, it’s only, like, the biggest surfing contest that happens in the
Palmetto State all year long. And according to ESA-Georgia District Directors
Jeff and Tara Mosley, this one was inspiring on many levels. “Todd
Youngblood, who won the Open Men's division (former long-time ESA Allstar Team Captain/
ESA-Southern South Carolina District Director), got very sick for a while and doctors
couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him as he got down to barely over 100
pounds,” said Tara. “They finally determined it was mercury poisoning from old
fillings in his teeth. This was the first major contest he has surfed (and won)
since he has recovered. It was very emotional for everyone there, very
touching. Todd now has four small children who were all there to watch him
surf. Just thought that was an interesting addition to the regular contest

Directors Denny and Terry Green, Competition Director Thornton White,
Tabulators Bill Hogan and Patti Noe, Judging Coordinator Norman Godley,
Equipment Manager Pete Burbage, and Beach Marshall Steve Fletcher for all their
assistance in making this year’s South Carolina State Surfing
Championships one for the record books.
