Beach Island Longboard Classic
WHEN: August 30th, 2009

Street, Brant Beach, NJ
WHY: To
revive the classic vibe in Southern New Jersey. Dubbed a “classic” event for a
reason, the LBI Longboard Classic allowed competitors to ride only vintage
longboards — no leashes and no board modifications. Contestants were
scored according to classic contest criteria, with noserides, drop-knee turns,
fin-first takeoffs, spinners, and length of ride determining scores. After delaying
the event because of Hurricane Bill’s well-overhead, long-period swell, the LBI
Longboard Classic still enjoyed three to four-foot offshore conditions from
Tropical Storm Danny. After the contest, surf instrumental band The
Diamondheads performed a retro mix of Dick Dale and Ventures tunes, along with
‘60s-inspired compositions of their own. In the end, over $1000 was raised for
