WHO: ESA-Delmarva
District
WHAT: 2009 Maryland State Surfing Championships
WHEN: Saturday, July 18th, 2009
WHERE: Ocean City, MD
WHY: For
trophies, prizes, and valuable ESA points towards ESA Mid-Atlantic Regional
Championships berths, and eventually the ESA Eastern Surfing Championships.
Usually on the East Coast, the main concern is whether or not there will be
enough waves to hold a scheduled contest. But on August 23rd, that wasn’t the
question. Instead, ESA-Delmarva District Director Chris Makibbin was seriously
considering postponing the contest due to waves from Hurricane Bill being too
big. But as Makibbin checked it at dawn on Sunday, it was obvious that the
swell was on its way down and would provide some challenging but contestable
surf throughout the day. For the menehune though, it was equivalent to saying
that the Eddie was on. Billabong and Von Zipper dished out some killer prizes
for the top finishers, including a fullsuit going to the Open Shortboard winner
and a springsuit to the Men’s winner. Of course, Ponzetti’s Pizza rewarded
everyone with its usual great pizza for all the surfers and their families.
Additional support for the ESA-Delmarva District came from its regional
sponsors Surfrider, Studio S, Quiet Storm, Chauncey’s, Malibu’s, and K-Coast. The
next ESA-Delmarva District contest will be the Quiet Storm Delaware State
Championships, which will be held at North Side Indian River Inlet or Tower
