WHAT: NSSA Southeast Conference Contests #1

WHEN: Saturday-Sunday, August 22nd-23rd, 2009
WHERE: Sebastian Inlet State Park, FL
WHY: For trophies, prizes, and valuable NSSA points towards the NSSA East Coast Championships, and eventually the NSSA National Championships. With Hurricane Bill swell bombarding the Florida coast, NSSA Southeast Conference Director Danielle Beckmann was a little nervous about what she’d wake up to come Saturday morning. “It’s always risky having a contest in August, so it was a huge relief to have solid swell after such a mellow summer. I went to sleep praying it wasn’t going to be too big — that’s probably one of the only times we’ll have that problem. I was in shock most of the day, but I was absolutely thrilled with the waves. Christian Miller pulled off three wins over the two contests, and five-year-old Kai Canubida was a real standout for me; the waves were especially massive for him. Also, North Carolina’s Stevie Pittman came down to surf the Southeast Conference and was heavily rewarded with three wins. I’m grateful to Billabong and Jeff “Burger” Hambrecht in particular for bringing Mark Occhilupo, Sterling Spencer, and Ryan Briggs over to stoke the kids out, because that’s what this is all about. I was over the moon excited about it; between that and the waves, it was a great way to start off the season.”
