WHAT: Rozo One-Design Longboard Invitational

WHY: North Florida surfing/ shaping legend Dick “Rozo”
Rosborough emerged from the shadows to host the Rozo One-Design Longboard
Invitational, which found contestants trading off six identical 9’4” high
performance longboards supplied by Rozo and Sunrise Surf Shop. With no entry
fee and free food from Where Ya Bean Coffee Shop, TacoLu Baja Mexicana, and
Cabo’s Pizza, 80 competitors flocked to the beach to enjoy fun little two-foot
shorepound crunchers. After early elimination rounds, the top 16 surfed in
three different four-man heats, with each surfer’s top score from each heat
added together for the final tally. That format allowed the finalists to surf
against all the other 15 contestants, not just the three in their heat. Supreme
stylist Justin Quintal breezed past the rest of the field with a 26.29 (or 8.76
average) to win 1st-place and a brand-new Rozo longboard. Aaron Bowden won a
week’s stay at Nosara Paradise Rentals, and the One-Design brought out North
Florida legends like Clay Bennett, Bruce Clelland, John Tully, and a formidable
North Jetty crew. Big mahalos go out to Paul West for making the event
possible.
