WHY: To get the ASF
South Carolina off the ground. With Contest #1 in the bag and the Village Surf
Shoppe 42nd Anniversary Herndon/Lebel Memorial done, the Palmetto State
competitive community was happy to welcome U.S.A. Champs/ NSSA Nationals
standouts Luke Gordon and Cam Richards back home.
But SC Chapter Director Denny Green says all
surfers will benefit from the ASF’s new focus. “Being a member of Surfing
America gives us the chance to advance these guys to the next level,” Green
said. “And with this new structure — four-man, 20-minute heats and a
modern membership and points program — these guys and girls are getting the
perfect atmosphere to bring their surfing up to par. Like we say in the ASF,
‘Take your surfing to the next level!’”
Green also emphasized that for all the
top-notch competition, the ASF SC Chapter offers a great family atmosphere along
with a powerful level of surfing — and bona fide South Carolina legends
like Kelly Richards, Bob Weaver, Curt Hein, Phil Jackson, and Wilton Jordan
offering up decades of experience. Other shout-outs go to fellow U.S.A.
Championship and NSSA Nationals competitors like Emory McClary, Katie Gordon, and
Leldon McClary, along with the next generation of rippers like Tyson Royston,
Micah Cantor, Addison Miles, Terry Green, Rusty Johnson, Morgan Weaver, and
Ryan Largin.
