WHO: Soon-to-be surf stars and pint-sized phenoms from Central Florida looking to step onto the East Coast contest scene.
WHAT: 2010 Gnarly Charley Grom Surf Series, Event #1

WHY: After 25 years of holding down the East Coast competitive circuit, “Gnarly” Charley Hajek is giving back to the surfing community by teaching sportsmanship, surf technique, and competitive heat strategy to the next generation of surfers through the Gnarly Charley Grom Surf Series.
The series provides competition training and surf instruction through camps and private lessons, as well as hosting contests that allow Hajek’s grom squad to put their new skills to the test. The first of these events in the 2010 Gnarly Charley Grom Surf Series drew a crowd of about 70 young surfers, one of Hajek’s largest turnouts in years, and supplied enough fun, games, and friendly competition to keep the kids thoroughly stoked from start to finish.
“They went nuts,” Hajek said. “They were stoked because, even if they lost, everyone got prizes. A good loser is a great winner, and I like to teach them that it’s important to be positive.” And with all that positivity bouncing around on the beach, the groms weren’t the only ones having fun. “Being with them just stokes me out,” Hajek said. “I’m just as excited as they are at all the events.”
Hajek also said he hopes that the skills and attitudes that he teaches kids will put them on the right path and keep them out of trouble. “I want to put them in the situation that I’ve been in my entire life,” he said. “I stayed off the streets because I was always surfing and stayed busy and involved.”
