WHAT: 2nd Annual Mayday Skim Comp
WHEN: Saturday, May 22, 2010
WHERE: Upham Beach, St. Petersburg Beach, FL
WHY: Wave Zone Skimboards and their team pro, St. Petersburg native Austin Piazza, put on several skim contests a year and continue to do their part to keep Florida skimmers stoked while promoting the evolution of the young sport. And the 2nd Annual Mayday Skim Comp was just another example of their efforts.
Small shorepound and homemade trophies were all that was needed to further the contest’s atmosphere of friendly competition, and everyone from up-and-coming young locals to Pro-Am veterans found a place to compete among the contest’s three divisions, creatively named I’m Good, I’m Better, and I’m The Best.
Most importantly, everyone who gathered for the 2nd Annual Mayday Skim Comp seemed to have a great time in the West Florida sun, so it’s probably safe to say that the event was a huge success. An afterparty at Beach Buns & Burgers kept the competitors fed, while other sponsors like Steezy Tees, Magma, Surf Shack, DNA Energy Drink, Stoke International, Gorilla Grip, and United Boarding Culture provided refreshments and prizes.
Next up for the Tampa/St. Pete-area skimboarding community is the High School W.P.A. Skim Comp on June 5th, again at Upham Beach and this time sponsored by Suncoast Surf Shop. Team up with others from your school to see who has the highest Wave Point Average.
