WHO: NSSA Southeast Conference
WHAT: Contest #7
WHEN: Sunday, February 14th, 2010
WHERE: Ponce De Leon Landing,
Melbourne Beach, FL
WHY: For trophies, prizes, and valuable NSSA points towards the NSSA East Coast Championships, and eventually the NSSA National Championships.
Valentine’s Day was cold and blustery as winter descended upon Central Florida, but the weather cleared up a bit in the afternoon and provided some wind, some warmth, and some waves for NSSA Southeast Conference.
Although cold, surfers suited up and paddled out to tackle to stormy conditions. Satellite Beach, FL’s, Chris Tucker was the hands-down standout of the day, surfing consistently and appearing to all but ignore the challenging conditions. Chris found himself accepting the title in Open and Explorer Men's, but he bowed out with a 4th-place finish in Explorer Juniors to new member Jackson Hail, who stepped up and made personal history by claiming his first NSSA victory. Tucker has taken over the ratings race in all three divisions, so keep an eye out for him at the NSSA East Coast Championships in April.
Luke Marks, Stevie Pittman, and Giorgio Gomez all made it to the top spot in Open Boys, Open Mini Groms, and Open Juniors, respectively, with Sam Duggan getting in the mix with his own win in Explorer Boys. Indialantic’s Emily Ruppert, who is helping to head up NSSA Southeast Conference’s Surf For Haiti drive with her mom Nancy, came away with the Explorer Women's victory while Savannah Bradley took home 1st-place in Open Women's and Nikki Viesins also emerged victorious in Explorer Girls.
Surf For Haiti donations continue to come in, and we are very grateful for the supplies that are headed to the Hearts Out To Haiti Mission. Hearts Out To Haiti has been in existence for over 10 years, supporting three parishes in Les Palmes, Morne a Chandelle, and Durissy. Special thanks and congratulations go out to Surf For Haiti partner DNA Energy Drink, whose Citrus Energy Drink won a platinum award for best-tasting energy drink at the 2009-2010 World Beverage Competition. Good job DNA, and mahalo for supporting our conference! Overall, the team effort shown by judges, staff, surfers, and parents was outstanding at Event #7, and all deserve huge thanks for the help with cleanup.
